LED FAQs

What is an LED?

LED Stands for Light Emitting Diode. A LED is a solid state device that works like a tiny light bulb that can be switched on or off instantly. They use very little power and have no filament that will wear out. LED’s are similar to transistors which make them more of an efficient light source, producing more light per watt than a regular bulb. Although the volts required operating LEDs are just two or three volts, they can last 100,000 hours or greater compared to 120 volts of a regular light bulb that only last approximately 1200 hours.

What is a pixel?

A pixel is a picture element. The more pixels used the higher the resolution resulting in a better picture quality. Electronic displays create pictures by lighting up or turning off pixels in a precise way to create your images. A pixel can consist of either one color (monochrome) or of multiple colors (RGB).

Monochrome LEDs - what are they?

Monochrome means one color diode within the display. The display will be in one color only, color choices can be red, green, blue or amber.

RGB LEDs - What are they?

RGB stands for Red, Green and Blue which are the 3 basic colors that the human eye can perceive. Using combinations of these 3 colors, many colors can be produced. In short RGB means in full color display.

What is resolution and why is it important?

The LED matrix resolution represents the number of pixels that are on a display. The higher the resolution, the better an image is on the display.

What is pitch and why is it important?

Pixel pitch is the distance from the center of one pixel to the center of the neighboring pixel. The closer the pixels are to each other the better the resolution of your display. The pitch is measured in millimeters. Bright N Ready offers a wide selection of pixel pitches from 12mm to 31mm.

What does matrix mean?

The number of LED pixels tall by the number of LED pixels wide. The more pixels in a given area the larger the matrix.

How is the brightness of an LED measured?

Brightness is measures in “NITS”, a unit of visible light intensity. One NIT is equivalent to 1 candela per square meter.

What is viewing angle?

Viewing angle is the angle measured from the center focal point of the screen image to the widest angle that the image can be clearly viewed.

How long should an LED last?

LED’s are rated for 100,000 hours or 11 years of useful life. At this point the LED bulb burn at 50% of their original brightness.
